Designed to Prepare Scholars for Life BEYOND Graduation

WHAT:

Partnering with James Island Charter High School's (JICHS) Equity & Access Team, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry (BBBSL) has launched the BIG Beyond, a three-year curriculum-guided program designed to help prepare high potential African-American scholars for life BEYOND graduation. 

In the spring of each year, JICHS recommends to BBBSL a cohort of 25-30 rising sophomores for participation in the program.

HOW:

Scholars & Families

• Each spring and summer, BBBSL enrolls 20-30 BIG Beyond scholar candidates for its incoming sophomore class
• All candidates who say YES to the program are enrolled in the BIG Beyond JICHS advisory cohort
• Two Wednesdays per month, scholars engage with BIG Beyond Staff and guest presenters within structured sessions on key topics
• During off-week advisory sessions, scholars engage with their advisor who reinforces concepts introduced during mentoring sessions
• Quarterly, scholars and their families gather in person on a Saturday to socialize, have fun, and learn
• All rising seniors can rely on BBBSL to assist them in securing a paid internship, an apprenticeship, and/or a summer exploratory learning opportunity

• Financial literacy and planning
• Social emotional education to include healthy relationships, emotional regulation, managing conflict, etc.
• Goal setting and time management
• Life skills
• Workplace etiquette, mock interviews, resume writing
• Career and college exploration/preparation (field exploration, test prep, financial prep, search process)
• Internships, apprenticeships, and/or summer exploratory learning opportunities
