As we enter July, we’re gearing up for back-to-school season with a variety of helpful resources for both Bigs and guardians. Be on the lookout for an email from us on July 14th with important information, including:

  • Upcoming school supply drives and giveaways
  • Details on school supply lists
  • Tips and tools to help students start the year strong

If you have any questions after receiving the email, please don’t hesitate to reach out to your Match Support Coordinator, Dana or Avery—they’re here to help!

At BBBSL, we encourage our matches to participate in free or low-cost activities, and we aim to provide one free match activity each month. Please note: space is limited at these events, so we recommend that Bigs sign up as soon as their Little confirms availability to ensure their spot.

We’re so proud of our graduating Littles for the hard work, dedication, and perseverance they’ve shown throughout their academic journeys. Their achievements are a testament to their strength and determination, and we couldn’t be more inspired.

We’re also incredibly grateful for the Bigs who’ve offered steady support and guidance along the way. We can’t wait to see what’s in store for our now Alumni Littles—your futures are bright, and we’re cheering you on every step of the way!

Check out what our Alumni Littles are doing next!

Summer fun often means outings, events, and busy public places. This month, take a moment to talk with your Little about what to do if they ever get separated from you or another trusted adult.

Ask your Little:

  • “Do you have a safety plan in case we get separated?”
  • “Do you know someone’s phone number by heart that you could call for help?”

Having a simple plan in place—and knowing at least one trusted phone number—can make a BIG difference in helping your Little feel safe and prepared.

Let’s help our Littles stay confident, calm, and connected this summer!

In June, our matches got to experience a night of Southern bites and spooky sights! They enjoyed a delicious dinner at Poogan’s Smokehouse, followed by a haunted carriage ride through historic Charleston. This unforgettable evening was made possible thanks to the generosity of one of our dedicated Bigs, Dana Moore, and the incredible support of Palmetto Carriage Works and Poogan’s Smokehouse.

We’re so grateful to our community partners for helping us create memorable, meaningful experiences for our Bigs and Littles!

Last month, our executive team from Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry had the incredible opportunity to attend The Power of We National Conference in Philadelphia.

Hosted by Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, the conference brought together agencies from across the country to learn, grow, and collaborate. From thought-provoking sessions to powerful conversations, we truly absorbed the meaning and momentum behind The Power of We.

We’ve returned to the Lowcountry reenergized, inspired, and more committed than ever to our mission of empowering youth through mentorship.

Last month, our matches cast a line and made some unforgettable memories at our June Match Activity, a fun-filled fishing clinic hosted by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources.

From learning new skills to bonding by the water, it was a reel-y great time for our Bigs and Littles. We’re so grateful to SCDNR for making this experience possible, and we’re already looking forward to our next outdoor adventure in the fall!

As we wrap up this month’s edition of The BIG News, we take a moment to reflect on two important July observances: National Make a Difference in a Child’s Life Month and National Minority Mental Health Awareness Month. These observances serve as powerful reminders of the work we do every day—creating meaningful mentoring relationships that support the well-being and potential of every child, especially those from historically underrepresented communities. Thank you for being part of our mission and for continuing to make a difference, one connection at a time.
