This month, we’re asking our Littles:
“When you’re playing outside, do you remember to wear sunscreen and drink plenty of water?

Wearing sunscreen: helps protect your skin when you’re out in the sun.

Drinking water: keeps you cool and helps you feel good while you play.

Taking breaks in the shade: gives your body time to rest.

Staying safe: means you can have even more fun outside!

Being prepared: helps you enjoy summer without any problems.

Embracing Diversity – A Guide for Bigs
On June 27th, our Programs Team will be sharing a helpful resource focused on embracing diversity and respectful relationships within our matches. This guide offers practical tips for Bigs to better understand, support, and celebrate the unique backgrounds of their Littles.

Kamaii joined the program and was excited at the thought of having a new friend and mentor. “I just wanted a male I could get out and do fun things with, since I live with all girls,” he said. Outside of school, Kamaii enjoys playing video games like Fortnite and Roblox, staying active with sports and workouts, and watching movies. But his greatest passion? Football. Over the past two years, Tony and Kamaii have bonded deeply over their shared love of the game. “My favorite sport is football, and Tony and I play it a lot. We also work out together at the gym,” Kamaii said. Tony has helped Kamaii sharpen his football skills and build up his self-esteem. “When I’m down in a situation he helps put a smile on my face” Kamaii shared. Looking ahead, he aspires to become a wide receiver in the NFL—and he knows Tony will be continue to support him on that journey. Though he doesn’t have one single favorite activity they have done together, he says every moment with Tony is a great one: “Everything we’ve done has been a fun memory.”

Our team had an amazing time at Wu Wednesday in Charleston, SC—a lively, hip-hop-themed night hosted by @thedroppingpin’s David White at The Whale: A Craft Beer Collective. We loved connecting with the community, sharing our mission, and spreading the word about our 2025 Golf Cart Raffle. Thanks to everyone who stopped by and showed support!

We were honored to attend Charleston Hope’s Women’s Workshop, where we explored mental health and the experience of being a woman in the workplace. With our CEO CJ Gathers emceeing, it was inspiring to be surrounded by such powerful and purposeful women—thank you, Charleston Hope!

As part of a recent culture team activity, our staff explored Charleston’s hidden alleyways with the amazing Dana Moore, one of our dedicated Bigs! Big thanks to Dana for the tour and for all she does—check out Experience Moore Tours!

We had a blast at Murder Mystery for a Cause: A Groovy Night for a Great Cause! Huge thanks to Genna & Todd Shelnutt and John at Front Porch Improv for making it unforgettable and helping us raise funds for youth mentorship!

We had a great time at Sky Zone in Mt. Pleasant sharing our mission and connecting with the community! Big thanks to Sky Zone for hosting this percentage day and supporting youth mentorship with Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry!

This June, Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry is proud to recognize several important month-long observances that align with our mission and values. We honor Pride Month, celebrating the LGBTQ+ community and reaffirming our commitment to creating inclusive and affirming spaces for all youth.

We also recognize that June includes Juneteenth, a day that marks the end of slavery in the United States and honors the resilience, freedom, and contributions of Black Americans throughout history. For those looking to join in local celebrations, J.O.Y. | Juneteenth On The Yard will take place on June 19 from 12:00–5:00 PM—a free community event honoring culture, history, and unity.

In addition, June is National Safety Month—and with the weather getting warmer, it’s important for our Littles to stay safe while enjoying summer fun. It’s up to our Bigs and Guardians to help ensure they’re taking the right precautions, like staying hydrated and wearing sunscreen.

These observances remind us of the importance of representation, care, and shared responsibility in building a stronger, more inclusive, and safer community for all.
