RSVP for the 02/20 BIG Huddle: Cross-cultural mentoring and attunement

We invite Bigs to our next BIG Huddle scheduled for February 20 from 5:30-6:30 PM via Zoom!  Our topic will be cross-cultural mentoring and attunement. What exactly does that mean, and why should you attend?

While we do our best to create compatible matches, ALL our mentoring relationships have differences within them along the lines of lived experience, religion, class, race/ethnicity, regional experiences, and more.  The good news is that differences ADD RICHNESS and offer such opportunities for personal AND match growth.

This BIG Huddle is designed to help you gain skills to help you get curious about differences, explore them, and bridge them into deeper relationships with your Littles/Scholars.

This session’s learning objectives will include:

  • Self-awareness and mapping mentor identity
  • What it means to “decenter” oneself
  • Learning how to create space for your Little to open up and become their own person
  • Staying open while managing one’s own beliefs and potential biases
  • Embodying healthy communication through “attunement” and curiosity
  • AND AS ALWAYS…time for Bigs to ask questions and seek answers

We hope you will participate!

Big Huddles are designed to support our Bigs as they continue to grow into strong mentors and help us to bring you content/training that addresses the questions/requests for support you bring up in your monthly or quarterly match support calls.  They also provide you with an opportunity to connect with other Bigs.  We received positive feedback from our past installments—“Connecting with Teens,” “The BIG Experience, ” and “Poverty, Toxic Stress & Mentoring”—and are committed to providing more valuable resources on an ongoing basis!

Bigs certainly give a lot, and sometimes doing so can be a little thankless.  Expectations about gratitude can cause frustration, OR we can RECLAIM the power. In this video, we will explore:

  1. Why we want gratitude
  2. Expectations for youth and families
  3. How to cultivate/model gratitude for your Little
  4. Being asset-based

BBBSL Bigs who suspect child abuse or exploitation in any form are to report this to their Match Coordinator or Merridith Crowe, CEO of BBBSL. This requirement to report abuse is per BBBSL and BBBSA standards regardless of whether they are designated by South Carolina as “mandated reporters.”

  1. BBBSL Big contacts a BBBSL staff member about suspected child abuse.
  2. BBBSL staff contacts Children Services in the county in which the suspected activity took place.
  3. BBBSL staff share information with their direct supervisor, who reports the information to the CEO.
  4. BBBSL CEO reports abuse allegations involving a Big, Little, Board member, non-mentoring volunteer, or staff member to the Board of Directors, BBBSL attorney, and BBBSA lead child safety staff contact.

BBBSL staff are mandated reporters. Reporting to child protection is required by law and BBBSL policy.
