The BIG News: February 2026

Recognizing Black History Month
Black History Month honors the contributions, leadership, and resilience of Black individuals and communities throughout history, while also recognizing the ongoing work toward equity and justice. Mentorship plays an important role in creating equitable access to opportunity, representation, and support for young people by building confidence, fostering belonging, and opening doors to possibility. Through strong, trusted relationships, mentorship helps young people see what is possible for their own lives and empowers them to shape their futures with purpose and pride.

Match Highlight: Lauren & Jayda

From Big Sister Lauren:
“I matched with Jayda when I was in college at the College of Charleston, but I’m originally from West Virginia. Coming to a new city, I felt like a fish out of water and wanted to do something that connected me to the community — and also gave me a built-in best friend.
I was the youngest ‘Big’ in the program and met Jayda just after she turned 7. One of the biggest highlights of our match is that we’ve truly grown up together. She used to help me study flashcards for finals, and now I’m walking her through college prep. It’s wild to think about how much of life we’ve shared side by side.
Another highlight has been staying connected through time and distance. When I left college, Jayda had the option to be matched with another Big, but she chose to stick with me. We’ve done long-distance on and off for the past five years, and I think it’s made our relationship even stronger. We’ve learned that while life doesn’t always keep people physically close, relationships can last when you show up and put in the effort.”

February Resource Update
At BBBSL, we know that preparing youth for life after high school is crucial to equipping young people with the knowledge, skills, and experiences they need to succeed. As part of our monthly resource share, we will be providing updated resources for college, career, and military support.
Guardians and Bigs will receive an email with detailed guidelines for each track. For additional support or questions, don’t hesitate to get in touch with your Match Support Coordinator, Dana or Avery.
Career Readiness
Career Readiness Starts with Mentorship
Today’s workforce requires more than technical skills. In our community, many young people lack exposure to career pathways, professional networks, and trusted adults who can help them plan for the future. Research shows that mentorship plays a critical role in empowering our youth to build the communication, confidence, and social skills employers value most.
Career Readiness: By the Numbers
- 75% of youth are concerned about whether they have the skills needed for employment
- 74% of young adults lack access to a mentor who can help guide career decisions
- 73% of mentored youth say their mentor introduced them to new or interesting careers
- Mentored youth are 20% more likely to enroll in college
- Over a lifetime, mentored youth earn an average of $200,000 more than their non-mentored peers
Through a mentoring relationship, youth gain the exposure needed in their careers to set meaningful goals, build confidence in their post-high school plans, and put them on the path to great success. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry, our Bigs help Littles explore their interests and strengths and ignite their potential to transform those conversations into achievable career goals that are supported by resources, activities, and exposure.

National Mentoring Month
In January, we celebrated mentorship throughout National Mentoring Month by uplifting the Bigs who make our mission possible every single day. Throughout the month, several of our Bigs shared meaningful moments, reflections, and personal stories that highlighted the power of mentorship and the deep, lasting relationships formed through our program. As a small token of appreciation, we also hosted a weekly gift card giveaway to thank our mentors for the time, care, and consistency they bring to their Littles and to our community. Below are a few highlights that reflect what the impact of mentorship truly means. We cannot thank our mentors enough for what they do every day by showing up, walking alongside their Littles, and offering steady support and encouragement. It truly makes a world of difference.

Vision Board Workshop

Our matches recently came together for a Vision Board Workshop, where Bigs and Littles brainstormed, collaborated, and supported one another’s goals for the year ahead. It was inspiring to see what our Littles are most excited about and the goals they’ll be working toward in 2026, with encouragement and guidance from their Bigs every step of the way. Moments like these are incredibly important in the lives of our Littles, helping propel them forward and giving them the confidence and motivation to continue pursuing their goals. They remind us just how powerful mentorship can be.
Snafu Brewing Company

This January, Snafu Brewing Company showed up big for our community by donating 50% of all The Role Model Sour beer sales to Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry. We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who raised a glass in support of local youth and to the amazing team at Snafu Brewing for their generosity and partnership. Their support makes a real impact, and we’re proud to partner with businesses that believe in empowering and investing in our Littles.

February Observances
February is a time to reflect on connection, leadership, and the power of showing up for one another. At Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Lowcountry, we continue celebrating the meaningful relationships that make mentorship so impactful. Our Bigs provide consistent guidance, encouragement, and support, helping Littles build confidence, resilience, and a strong sense of belonging. We are grateful to our mentors, families, donors, and community partners whose continued support allows these one-to-one relationships to grow and thrive
This month also includes several other observances that align with our mission:
Valentine’s Day (February 14) reminds us that care, connection, and compassion are at the heart of everything we do. Mentorship is built on trust and meaningful relationships, and these bonds help Littles feel valued, supported, and encouraged every step of the way.
Random Acts of Kindness Week (February 17–23) celebrates the impact of small, thoughtful actions. Mentorship is a powerful example of how consistent kindness and presence can make a lasting difference in a young person’s life.
