May is Mental Health Awareness Month, a time to recognize the impact mental health has on all of us, especially the youth in our community. Today, many young people are facing challenges that often go unseen or unrecognized. Through mentorship, we have the opportunity to step in early, build trusting relationships, and create a space where youth feel supported, heard, and understood.

As traditional support systems continue to shift and isolation becomes more common, mentorship provides a consistent, meaningful connection. These relationships are not just important; they are impactful. Research shows that mentored youth experience a 20 percent reduction in depressive symptoms and a 16 percent increase in emotional regulation compared to their peers.

May is also AAPI Heritage Month, a time to honor the culture, history, and contributions of Asian American and Pacific Islander communities. It is an opportunity to celebrate diversity, uplift voices, and continue building a community where every young person feels seen, valued, and supported.

This month, we are reminded that connection is powerful, and showing up for young people can make a lasting difference.

Katie and Peyton’s match began in December, and since then, their time together has naturally been filled with moments that feel both simple and meaningful. They’ve gone to the movies, spent time at Stars and Strikes, painted in the park, gone birthday shopping, played pickleball, and explored local playgrounds. Somewhere between the outings, they’ve also found their rhythm, often ending the day with chicken wings, ice cream, or sometimes both, something Peyton looks forward to just as much as the activity itself.

From Peyton’s guardians’ perspective, what stands out most is how much joy Peyton carries home after each visit. She comes back “bursting with stories…so vivid, so animated, and full of joy,” retelling their adventures in a way that makes even the simplest moments feel magical. Over time, she’s noticed Peyton growing more confident, more expressive, and more herself, describing the shift as “beautiful to watch.”

For Katie, the connection has grown in its own steady way. She shares that they have “really enjoyed getting to know each other,” and describes Peyton as “a joy,” noting her humor, intelligence, beautiful singing voice, and the kind of politeness that stands out right away. Even in the middle of fun outings, Katie finds small moments to support Peyton’s goals, whether that’s reading comprehension or building confidence, weaving growth naturally into their time together.

What’s come through most clearly from both sides is not just what they do together, but how it feels to be in it. Katie shared, “I truly enjoy our time together,” and that sentiment echoes in the way Peyton talks about their days, as if she can’t wait to experience them again.

For May, our monthly resource focuses on encouraging youth confidence & self-esteem. Small moments of support can make a big impact, and we’re sharing simple ways to help your Little through everyday conversations, goal-setting, and match activities. Please reach out to your Match Support Coordinator, Dana or Avery, if you have any questions!

BBBSL encourages our matches to focus on free or low-cost activities, and we aim to provide ONE FREE monthly activity for matches. Capacity at these events is limited, so we encourage Bigs to sign up as soon as their Littles confirm they can attend!

On April 22nd, several of our Bigs and Littles took their match to the green at the Charleston Municipal Golf Course as part of the “Golf With Us” program, hosted in partnership with Bank of America and Sidney Rice. The event brought together 50 youth from across the Lowcountry for a day centered on learning the game of golf, while also building foundational life and career skills.

More than just time on the course, the experience focused on discipline, focus, and resilience. Through hands-on instruction and guided play, youth were introduced to how these skills show up both in golf and in everyday life, especially when navigating challenges, setbacks, and growth. These are the same skills that carry into school, future careers, and personal development.

As Sidney Rice shared, golf has taught him discipline, focus, and the resilience needed to overcome challenges,” and he expressed pride in partnering with Bank of America to help share that mindset with young people across Charleston. The program reflected that vision, offering Littles a space to learn, practice, and connect while being encouraged to see their own potential both on and off the course.

For our matches, it was a meaningful day that blended mentorship with real-world skill building, reinforcing that career readiness often starts with experiences like these, where confidence, character, and curiosity grow one swing at a time.

Join us for a Kendra Scott Giveback event on May 23 from 12–2 PM at Kendra Scott in downtown King Street.

It’s a wonderful opportunity to shop, connect with fellow supporters, and enjoy an afternoon out while giving back. 20% of all sales during the event will be donated to support our programs, making it an easy and meaningful way to make an impact.

Stop by, bring a friend, and spread the word. Be sure to say hello—we’d love to see you and thank you in person for your continued support.

Recently, our matches spent an afternoon at The Pickle Bar, coming together for a fun and meaningful day of pickleball.

Through friendly competition and shared experiences, Bigs and Littles built deeper connections while enjoying plenty of laughs along the way. Moments like these create space for confidence to grow, encourage self-discovery, and strengthen the bonds that make mentorship so impactful.

Throughout the afternoon, Bigs were there every step of the way, offering support, encouragement, and celebration as their Littles tried something new and embraced the experience.

Opportunities like this are made possible through the continued support of our community, helping us create moments that truly matter.

Last month, we joined our friends at Cannon Distillery for Thankful Thursday, and it was a great evening connecting with the community in a relaxed, welcoming space.

We spent time chatting with patrons about our mission, sharing the impact of our programs, and spreading the word about our Golf Cart Raffle. It was a simple yet meaningful way to connect with people, answer questions, and raise awareness of the work we do.

We’re grateful for opportunities like this that allow us to step out into the community, have real conversations, and continue growing support in such an authentic way.
